Do you have advice for people thinking about buying in Bulgaria?

Carry out plenty of research to ensure that the property’s location, specifications and surroundings suit what you intend to use it. It’s crucial to choose a reputable estate agency and an independent, approved legal firm to make the buying procedure as hassle free as possible.

Choosing an agent who keeps you informed of progress will mean that you don’t feel left out on a limb wondering what’s going on when you’re in the UK. It’s also very important that your agent shows you finished developments if you’re buying off-plan. This way, you can get a good idea of the building quality of the developers they deal with, as well as being able to picture the end result you are buying into.

Your impressions of the country?

The people are friendly and the tourist areas are clean. Property is still very affordable – and as for the cost of living, it seems like it will be a long time before it catches up with Western European prices.

It’s a very underdeveloped country, but there’s already been considerable EU funding for improving its infrastructure and tourist hotspots, which is a great indication of the way things are heading.

What are the main attractions in the areas where you’ve bought?

There are plenty of things to do for people of all ages and interests, and this is quite an important aspect when thinking of rental appeal. Snorkelling and sailing are just some of the many beach activities, while Bansko appears to be the leading ski resort with golf still to come – plus fishing, walking, horseriding and historical sightseeing.

The fact that Bansko was a candidate for the 2014 Winter Olympics illustrates that Bulgaria is an up-and-coming country. In fact, we’re already thinking of it as the future Aspen! At present, there’s more than 40 miles of ski runs, lighting for after-dark skiing with guaranteed snow during peak season which spans December to May. Plans to expand the ski facilities are accompanied by the addition of a golf complex which will boast an Ian Woosnam-designed 18-hole course. The golf complex and surrounding properties are still in the early stages of construction, so there’s wide scope for rising prices by the time the whole development is complete. We’re hoping that being patient will bring big rewards in the future.

Bulgaria is a three-hour flight from the UK, with prices for return flights ranging from £75 to £150. Budget airlines are flying there, so with even more airlines competing, it should make life easier for our own holidays as well as encouraging others either to go on holiday or buy property themselves.
